In Uganda, 87 teachers were trained from 8 to 11 April by the education union UNATU to address gender inequality and School Related Gender Based Violence. The training was held in the Nakapiripirit and Moroto districts (Karamoja sub-region), where physical, emotional and sexual forms of violence are among the reasons that explain high school dropout rates among girls. The UNATU Chairman and the UNATU General Secretary, the district education officer, school inspectors and community leaders also attended the training, which aimed at making schools friendly and supportive for girls as well as for boys, to prevent dropping out leading to child labour. Teachers adopted actions plans that they will implement in schools, including creating awareness of girls and boys on menstrual hygiene management, to avoid girls being victims of bullying. Community leaders committed to share what they learned in the workshop within the villages to combat harmful practices towards girls.

This training was part of the “Work No Child’s Business” programme jointly implemented by UNATU, Save the Children and NASCENT.
