Uganda: Empowering Ugandan teachers as a way to increase school enrollment and retention

90 teachers from Nakapiripirit and Moroto districts (Karamoja sub-region), were trained from 6th – 7th August, 2022. The training conducted by UNATU (Uganda National Teachers Union) focused more on providing psycho-social support to the learners and parents experiencing social and other problems that affect learning outcomes, school enrollment and retention.

The teachers that received this training, can now be able to provide psycho-social support to victims of school related gender-based violence (GBV) and other forms of abuse including sexual exploitation, bullying, and verbal insults which contribute to high drop-out rates and Child Labour.

They will engage girls in pre-menstruation lessons and offer advice to help them avoid stigma and risk of dropping out when the first period occurs. They will also improve the co-curricular activities, such as games, music and sports, as a way to boost school interactions and attractiveness in order to increase school enrollment and retention. They will also do better follow-up routines with families, such as guidance in education related issues, including for children who were withdrawn from school.

This training was part of the “Work No Child’s Business” programme jointly implemented by UNATU, the NGOs Save the Children and Nascent RDO.
