India: Learning programme for children without access to online classes

Ever since India has entered the lockdown due to COVID-19, online classes have exposed the digital divide in the country. Even though online classes are a viable education alternative, unequal and irregular access to the internet illustrates that access to online education is largely dependent on location and household income. A survey of the NCERT (National Council of Educational Research and Training) suggests that 27% of the pupils do not have a smartphone and laptop, meaning one-third of the children do not have the resources to join online classes.

With an innovative and creative initiative, our WNCB partners ARAVALI and Manjari in Rajasthan have come up with a learning program through the worksheet method. Over 1500 children of class 1 to 5 have benefited and continued education throughout the pandemic. Rajesh Kumar, a parent said, “We, as parents, were suffering due to lack of access to online classes for our children. Now even we are assisting the children to study and touching base. The worksheet distribution has been highly beneficial.”
