Stakeholder dialogue on education and child labour

The Uganda National Teachers Union (UNATU) convened a national stakeholders’ dialogue on education and child labour. Ministry officials, 27 Members of Parliament, and a variety of stakeholders attended the event that took place on November 29 (2023), as part of WNCB jointly implemented by UNATU, NASCENT, Hivos and Save the Children. Thanks to the programme, over 9,000 children have been brought back from child labour or prevented from being pulled into child labour in the Karamoja and Busia regions.

Programme partners used this meeting to advocate for the implementation of existing laws and policies against child labour. They highlighted the lack of teachers, teachers’ houses, and the lack of food for children in the schools in the Karamoja region. The distance between villages and schools was also highlighted. “Community schools were set up by the project, they now have to be taken over by the Government”, stated Filbert Baguma, UNATU General Secretary.
