Multi-stakeholder collaboration in gold mining in Uganda

Next steps

EWAD’s work in Busia is a work in progress. From 2018 EWAD and partners have worked with a range of successful strategies that fit within the context of Busia and that have led to changes. At the same time, EWAD needs to continuously adapt these strategies and respond to (new) challenges.

Continuing community engagement

Despite the visible changes in Busia, such as children out of work and parents who have started ‎demanding quality education, EWAD continues to work with the communities. EWAD will continue to strengthen Income-Generating Activities for families, along with establishing strong Village Savings and Loan Associations structures with capacity to tap into government social protection programmes.

Strengthening the quality of education

EWAD sees that there is a need for more capacity in the motivational centres and the need to reach children while they are still young. EWAD also sees the need for teacher training, e.g. on active learning methodologies, as a sustainable solution for improving quality education in government schools as well as the motivational centres.

Continuing dialogue and collaboration with businesses

EWAD will continue the open dialogues and focused ‎discussions with business ‎stakeholders and the government on child labour and ‎RBC as well as working conditions in the gold mines.‎
