Uganda: Exchange Visit

The WNCB consortium in Uganda, consisting of Uganda National Teachers’ Union (UNATU), Save the Children Uganda, Nascent Research and Development Organization Uganda (NRDO-U) and Environmental Women in Action for Development (EWAD) received a delegation of international WNCB alliance partners operating in other countries of Africa (Mali & Ivory Coast). The delegation came to be part of an exchange visit organized by HIVOS that took place on 11th – 18th of September 2022.

The purpose of this visit was to learn, share knowledge and thoughts among partners in order to understand how the WNCB alliance can collaborate more with multiple partners and stakeholders in-country and across, including upscaling and replication of best practices learned during the exchange visit.

Project areas that were visited include Karamoja region (Moroto and Nakapiripirit districts) and the Eastern region (Busia district), all of which are mining areas with cases of child labour. The alliance has made numerous interventions to end child labour in these regions by doing a number of practices that help withdraw children from child labour and back into schools. Many vocational skilling programs have been introduced for the youth who cannot go back to school and income-generating activities (IGAs) have been introduced by the alliance to improve the livelihoods of the most vulnerable people so that they can take care of their families, hence reducing child labour cases.

Many Local Government officials from the respective project area districts were part of this exchange visit and pledged to give more support while increasing collaboration with the WNCB alliance in the fight against child labour.
