Uganda: School opening after two-year closure

10 January 2022 is an important date for children and teachers in Uganda: all schools will be reopened, after a two-year closure caused by the Covid pandemic. In the Nakapiripirit and Moroto districts (Karamoja region), a back to school campaign is currently being implemented by teachers in partnership with the District Education authorities, local councilors and opinion leaders.

The teachers have been trained on child labour by the Ugandan education union UNATU under the WNCB programme. Teachers meet parents in their communities to convince them to send their children back to school. Gold mining, animal grazing and small street vending are among the forms of child labour encountered in this region of Uganda.
